Latest Blackboard Updates (Service Pack 14) Features and Newly added Items

This session is an overview of recently added new items: the Content Collection which allows content to be shared across courses and across the institution, the E-Portfolio application which allows students to collect work and demonstrate progress over their career at Sul Ross and the Mobile Apps which improves Blackboard access from mobile devices.

Online Course Design

This session covers online course design industry standards. We will look at the Quality Matters Rubric and the Blackboard exemplary course rubric to give faculty an idea of what is considered optimal online course design. The rubrics address learning objectives, assessment, learner engagement, technology and learner support.

This session examines different methods for organizing your course including the use of folders, modules and customizing the course menu.

Blackboard 101

This session is designed for instructors new to Blackboard. We will cover basic Blackboard operations, how to add and edit content and a quick overview of the basic Blackboard tools. This is a quick jump start to Blackboard.

Assignment Tool / Safe Assign

The Assignment Tool in Blackboard allows an instructor to manage and grade regular written assignments.

SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool that detects unoriginal content in students' papers by identifying areas of overlap between submitted assignments and existing works. SafeAssign can also be used to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase without giving credit to the original source. The SafeAssign feature is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool.

Announcement Tool / Calendar

The announcement tool is a very powerful communication tool. You can add videos, audio, images and text to your class announcements. Use the announcement tool to recap previous activities and prepare students for future ones. The calendar tool helps keep students up to date and aware of upcoming assignments.

Communication Tools

Get an overview of the different communication tools Blackboard offers. We will cover the discussion board, blogs, journals, wikis and the glossary too. Learn the differences between them and how and why you want to use them.

Grade Center / Rubrics

See the new inline grading interface and learn how rubrics can speed up the grading process. We will cover creating columns, organizing the grade center and how to add rubrics to assignments, discussion boards and other tools.

Quiz Tool / Respondus

Learn how to set up quizzes and exams and reduce cheating. Respondus is a program that allows you to create your exams in Microsoft Word and upload them into Blackboard, saving time and eliminating the tedium of adding one question at a time.

 E-Portfolio

We have just purchased the E-Portfolio tool for Blackboard. Learn how students can use this tool to collect artifacts and track their progress throughout their careers at Sul Ross.

Web conferencing offers the opportunity to talk to your students live and share your computer screen. There are several products available. We will demonstrate and discuss several options.

 Lecture Capture

Record a class lecture or annotate a power point. We will show you how to record a lecture and add a link to your Blackboard course. There are several options we will discuss.
